Paul Mariani, SJ, Final Vows on Candlemas 2010 @ Santa Clara Mission at SCU
Fr. Paul Mariani, S.J., a 44 year old member for 18 and 1/2 years of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), made his final vows on Candlemas, February 2, 2010, while he was kneeling in front of the host held up for adoration after the consecration. During his planning for what turned out to be a beautiful reverent Mass, Father Paul included many traditional Catholic liturgical practices that are not usually included in modern Jesuit Novus Ordo liturgies, including the procession for Candlemas with Proper Gregorian chant antiphon sung by a cantor and the lighting of candles. The Alleluiah was also Proper for the feast. The Kyrie was in Greek and the Sanctus and Agnus Dei were in Latin. It's getting to be a truism that the younger men coming into the priesthood have love and respect for the traditional liturgical practices. Paul Mariani, S.J. seems to one of those.
